The Ritual of Coffee: An Herb, A Memory, A Moment of Return

There’s something about the ritual of coffee that feels like coming home.

Growing up, coffee was always in the background of life. A percolator gently bubbling on the stove for my grandfather. My grandmother’s old countertop coffee maker humming through the morning. It wasn’t just a drink—it was atmosphere. It was presence. It was what filled the space while life was happening around it.

Now, years later, I find myself returning to that same ritual in my own way.

I’ve explored so many methods over time—pour over, drip, French press—and right now, I’ve come back to the percolator. And I have to say… it might be my favorite.

There is something deeply grounding about it.

Watching the coffee rise into the glass knob, cycling through over and over again. Seeing the color slowly deepen. Hearing the soft rhythm of it. Feeling the steam move through the kitchen. Smelling it before it ever reaches your cup.

It asks you to slow down.
To stay present.
To witness something becoming.

Coffee as an Herb

Coffee is not just a beverage—it is a plant medicine in its own way.

It comes from a seed, an herb of the earth, and like many herbs, it carries different qualities depending on how it is grown, roasted, and prepared.

Lighter roasts (often called blonde roasts) tend to be brighter, more acidic, and more stimulating in a quick, sharp way. Medium roasts bring balance—softness with structure. Dark roasts are deeper, richer, more grounding, with less acidity and a heavier body. And espresso—the one I personally gravitate toward—is concentrated, bold, and intense. It carries a strong, immediate presence that can feel both awakening and anchoring at the same time.

The caffeine itself also shifts depending on roast and preparation. Lighter roasts often carry slightly more caffeine by weight, while darker roasts feel smoother and more grounded in the body. Espresso, though small in size, delivers a concentrated experience that meets you quickly and fully.

But beyond all of that—coffee is an experience with energy. It meets you where you are.

The Ritual of Returning to Yourself

What I’ve come to love most is not just the coffee itself, but the ritual around it.

The pouring. The waiting. The first sip. The instinct to gently blow across the top so you don’t burn your lip. The way your body pauses for just a moment before you fully take it in.

These small acts become something more when you slow down enough to feel them.

Because in that slowness… something else begins to surface.

For me, it becomes memory.

Not always loud memories—but subtle ones. Sensory ones. The smell of coffee in the background of childhood mornings. The sound of life happening while something warm was always being made.

And sometimes, in those quiet moments, there is a soft contrast that arises—the awareness that even in childhood chaos, there were grounding smells, grounding rituals, grounding anchors… like coffee drifting through the air.

And now, as an adult, I understand those moments differently.

They weren’t just routines.
They were stabilizers.
They were presence in the midst of everything else.

Choosing Presence Now

Today, I don’t just drink coffee for energy.

I drink it to return.

To myself.
To the moment.
To something slower and more intentional than the pace of the world.

And I especially love a deep, dark espresso—the kind that is bold, rich, and grounding. Something that doesn’t rush, but meets you exactly where you are.

Because maybe that’s what rituals really are.

Small daily returns to ourselves.
Small moments that remind us we are here.
We are alive.
And we don’t have to rush through everything.

Sometimes healing isn’t a breakthrough or a big moment.

Sometimes it’s just a cup of coffee…
the smell rising…
and allowing yourself to stay long enough to feel it.

Rituals of Healing

This is what I’ve come to understand through my own journey—healing doesn’t always arrive in the big, loud moments we expect it to.

Sometimes it shows up in the smallest rituals.

A cup of coffee.
A breath taken before the day begins.
A scent that brings you back to yourself.
A moment where you pause long enough to actually feel your life instead of rushing through it.

These everyday rituals become anchors. They soften what has been heavy. They reconnect us to parts of ourselves we may have forgotten how to listen to.

And this is why I’ve begun to see life itself as a series of healing rituals—simple, human, sensory moments that gently bring us back home.
