Working with children is always a sacred calling. But when you work with kids who have already endured trauma, instability, or pain at such young ages, something else happens. The room feels different. The air vibrates differently. There’s a tenderness that asks you not only to show up as a caretaker or mentor, but also as a witness — and sometimes as a vessel.
In my new position, I’ve been surrounded by children of all ages. Many of them have lived through things no child should have to experience. And as an empath and lifelong intuitive, I’ve begun noticing what I can only describe as protective energies moving around some of these kids.
I’ve seen them before: large figures in my peripheral vision, a sense of presence in the room, subtle taps on my shoulder or hair being lightly played with. Some might call it fatigue or stress — and yes, I’m working new hours and juggling a lot personally — but this isn’t new to me. I’ve been connected to energies and the other side since I was born. Seeing, hearing, or sensing beings around others has always been part of my reality.
Guardians in the Room
I believe that many of these children have protectors with them — ancestors, angels, spirit guides, or simply energies of love that choose to stand watch. These presences aren’t scary or invasive; they’re comforting. They feel like shields around fragile hearts.
Society tends to dismiss or ridicule people who can sense what others can’t see. But for empaths and intuitives, it’s simply part of how we navigate the world. Just as some people have exceptional hearing or smell, some of us have a sensitivity to subtle energy. That sensitivity becomes a gift when used with care.
Catalysts for Change
Every now and then, a catalyst appears — an empath, a healer, a teacher — someone whose presence helps shift the energy of a space. I’ve started noticing that at my workplace. There are others here who are sensitive like me. We’re all different, with our own unique gifts and “magic,” but we’ve been placed together for a reason.
It feels as if the universe is planting divine beings in specific places, at specific times, to help. We’re not just colleagues. We’re gardeners of souls. Our role is to plant seeds of safety, hope, and possibility inside these children.
When a child who has been through darkness meets adults who see them, protect them, and believe in them, something powerful happens. Those little seeds of light — the ones planted quietly in moments of kindness, consistency, and authentic care — begin to root. They may take years to bloom, but when they do, that child grows into an adult who knows their worth, who carries resilience and self-love, and who can pass those seeds on to others.
We Are All Protected
The truth is, even in our worst seasons, we are never alone. We may feel abandoned, but there are unseen currents working on our behalf — whether you call them guides, angels, ancestors, or simply the force of love. When the time for change comes, the right people are drawn to us. And when the right people show up, entire timelines can shift.
For the children I work with, for the empaths who’ve been called to stand beside them, and for anyone reading this who has endured a “shitty” season — please know: you’re not forgotten. You’re being guided. You’re being protected. The seeds being planted in you now may not look like much yet, but one day, they’ll bloom.
Closing Thoughts
I used to think my sensitivity was a burden. But in spaces like this, with children who need gentle eyes and strong hearts, I see how it’s a gift. I’m learning that the protectors we sense aren’t just around the kids — they’re also around us, nudging us, connecting us, weaving us together to do the work.
We are catalysts. We are planters. And someday, we’ll see the gardens.
